Q: How can I tell which version I currently have opened?
Open the Version History and look at the "Currently Open File" details. If you need to select the copy you have open for a review, it will automatically be the top version in the Modification History section.
Q: I don’t remember creating a copy of my file that now appears in the Version History. How can I tell where it came from?
You can select the item in the Version Index (Lineage, All Copies) and see details in the Modification History. The Comments section of the bottom entry will indicate which file this file was created from.
Legacy VH pane: By right-clicking on the version name and selecting Identify Origin, you will be able to see the origin of that particular version. If you are using v10.18.4 or beyond, the Lineage section of the Version History pane displays this information.
